Lyndsay and Tom’s Wilton’s Music Hall wedding was the third time I’ve shot at this fantastic London venue. Tucked down a side alley not far from Tower Bridge, it’s one of London’s hidden gems. The building itself dates back to the 1690s and it started to be used as a music hall in 1859 with the idea of bringing West End glamour and glitz to the East End. Ever since then it’s been known for theatre and music and I can vouch for the diverse array of productions it hosts every year having visited a few times over the years.
You might be forgiven for thinking that a venue where the main auditorium has no natural light might not be a great place for a summer wedding celebration and even less so for successful photography! But it really has to be seen to be appreciated. And for weddings the venue is transformed into a wonderland by low level theatrical lighting and a wealth of rich colours and textures, from the red velvet stage curtains to the gold painted chairs. A special mention to the florist Grace and Thorn who covered the venue in an amazing display of wildflowers. For a photographer it’s a playground and I think it suits my style very well, providing little pockets of light that can be used to make evocative and dramatic pictures.
So when Lyndsay and Tom got in touch about their Wilton’s Music Hall wedding you can probably gather that I was very excited to get involved. And it was every bit as good as I hoped it would be. From the drama of the ceremony on the stage, Lyndsay’s effortlessly cool and elegant Jeanne Source dress, some very funny (and cheeky!) speeches to the epic party that kicked off after first dance. The band were one of the best (and funkiest) I’ve seen at a wedding for a long time and you could easily imagine that you were at a gig. The stage at Wilton’s provided the perfect backdrop and it’s safe to say a damn good time was had by all!
I have very fond memories of the first wedding I shot at Wilton’s. It was an emotional occasion and I still feel humbled to have been part of it. Check out this blog post of Clara and Jason’s wedding to see more.
